August Teague – Nordic Program Director
August has an impressive 14-year coaching history, helping athletes of all levels achieve their goals while developing a passion for Nordic skiing. August led the Nordic programs at both Whitman College and University of Nevada, Reno, before becoming the Director of Skiing at the University of Nevada, Reno. He then spent 4 years with the Australian Ski Team, leading them through two World Championships and one Olympic cycle. Most recently, August has run his own junior club in Truckee, CA.
While 2016-2017 will be August’s first year on staff with AVSC, August is no stranger to the Roaring Fork Valley. His passion for Nordic skiing was cultivated right here at the club. From AVSC, he went on to ski for Colorado Rocky Mountain School and eventually the University of Denver. He’s thrilled to return to Aspen to share his love of cold wind in the ears, sun on the face, and skis sliding on snow with the AVSC Nordic athletes.

Travis Moore – Aspen High School Head Coach, Aspen
Travis is an Aspen native and product of the AVSC Nordic Team. He has raced at the Junior National Championships many times and skied for the NCAA DI University of Colorado. He continued to pursue his racing dreams after college where he raced himself into the top 15 athletes in the country. In 1998, Travis won the first ever Elk Mountains Grand Traverse on his Nordic skis. He continues to make a name for Nordic skiers in Aspen and has been an integral part of the AVSC Nordic coaching staff for over 20 years. He is a science teacher at Aspen High School and makes training fun because of his ability to name plants and rocks. He is also capable of endless improv jokes. Justin Silcox – Spring Gulch Head Coach, Carbondale
Justin Silcox is originally from Shelburne, Vt and now lives in Carbondale. He learned to ski with his family and started racing as a young Bill Koch Ski League participant. Justin has coached for powerhouse programs all over the country including: the Jackson Hole Ski Club, Bridger Ski Foundation, Mansfield Nordic, Boulder Nordic Junior Racing Clubs and now AVSC. In addition to coaching, Justin is a science teacher at Glenwood Springs High School. He likes to spend his weekends at ski races or with family….anything outside in the mountains!

Austin Weiss – Head Devo Team Coach, Aspen
Austin was born and raised in Baltimore, MD but has lived in Colorado for the past 23 years. He has a B.A. in Outdoor Education from Prescott College and worked for Outward Bound for 10 years. He is an avid rock climber and mountaineer and was the team leader for the 1991 American Manaslu Expedition. Austin is a master trail groomer and has been instrumental in the homologation of our race courses. He is a USSA L100 certified coach and has been on the AVSC coaching staff for over 10 years. He is currently Open Space and Natural Resource Manager for the City of Aspen and he coaches local marathon runners in the summer through Challenge Aspen. Emily VanGorp – Head Devo Coach, Carbondale
Emily grew up in Roseville, Minnesota where she started ski racing in 7th grade. She had an impressive junior career with success at the regional and national level, qualifying for 5 consecutive Junior National teams. She went on to ski race for NCAA DI Montana State University where she found her love for the mountains. Emily earned a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Minnesota and began her coaching career with the Saukko Ski Club, assisting at many USSA races. After receiving her degree she moved to the Roaring Fork valley to practice orthopedics. Emily started coaching with AVSC in 2011 and has worked with all ages groups from Base Camp to National Comp Teams. Ben Dodge – Aspen High School Coach, Aspen
Ben Dodge is a rural Minnesotan at heart, though he’s lived in Aspen for 27 years. Ben began cross country skiing at a young age and had a successful junior and college career. He is a College of St. Scholastica graduate who raced for the NCAA team at the University of Minnesota Duluth. After college, Ben moved to Aspen to see how fast he could be on skis. He was a nationally ranked racer throughout the early 90’s. Through his post college career, he learned a ton about waxing and race support at a high level and soon became a coach for the Aspen Junior Racing Team. Ben has coached for AVSC for almost 20 years. He is the Executive Director of the 10th Mountain Huts and has two very talented daughtor’s that recently graduated from the AVSC Nordic Program. For questions about the comp team, contact Ben here.

Rob Russell – Devo Team Coach, Carbondale
Rob Russell is an avid Spring Gulch cross country skier. He come to us from Grand Rapids, Michigan after earning his Master’s Degree in Architecture at the University of Colorado. Rob has a competitive swimming background which gives him a profound understanding of training theory and what it takes to be a fast skier. Rob is a USSA L100 certified coach. He lives in Carbondale, CO and works for Groundsprout LLC. Rob and his wife, Elinor, will have a son in his first year with the AVSC Nordic Program this year! Contact Rob here.
Sari Anderson – Base Camp Director, Carbondale
Sari Anderson started skate skiing as training for mountain biking 18 years ago. She has been a professional mountain biker with multiple national championships, world champion adventure racer, national champion ski mountaineering racer and trail runner but is spending less time competing herself and more time getting people involved in the sports she loves. Coaching, whether it be women’s mountain biking, SkiMo technique or Nordic, has been one of the most rewarding things Sari has done throughout her athletic career. When not coaching, Sari can be found training, alpine skiing with her family or escaping to the desert for a midwinter mountain bike trip. Bryan Cook – 2015-2016 National Comp Coach
Bryan Cook was born and raised in Rhinelander, WI, home of the Hodag. He came from a long line of cross country skiers with parents who coached at every level, 4 siblings that skied in college and an older brother who raced for team USA in the 2006 Olympics in Torino. Bryan graduated from Northern Michigan University where he was a ski team captain and multiple time NCAA All American. He graduated with a B.S. in International Studies. Bryan then continued on to race for the CXC Elite Team and the Craftsbury Green Racing Project having several National Championship podiums and World Cup Starts. Bryan joined the AVSC coaching staff in 2013. He is a USSA L100 certified coach, teaches at Blue Lake Preschool and works as wax tech for the Craftsbury Green Racing Project. Jeff Alden – 2014-2015 National Comp Team Coach
Hanging around the AVSC Clubhouse, you may better know Jeff as “Jefe.” Jeff grew up competing in biathlon and Nordic in Northern Maine. After high school he continued to train, race and attend school at the Sollefteå Skidgymnasium in Sollefteå, Sweden. While in Sweden, Jeff completed in biathlon at the Europa Cup level and received his coaching certification from the Swedish Biathlon Federation. From there, Jeff continued to compete in Nordic, cross country and track and field at Colby College. Jeff has been coaching with AVSC since 2011 and works at the Aspen Parks and Recreation Department as a Financial Analyst.
Nils Koons – 2014-2016 Comp Team Coach, Carbondale
Nils Koons is a Dartmouth College graduate originally from New Zealand and transplanted to Maine. Nils has been with AVSC for the past two years. He has skied for the Dartmouth College NCAA team, Rossignol, and the Craftsbury Green Racing Project professional team. Nils competed at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships in Oslo, Norway and Val di Fiemme, Italy, respectively. He has vast knowledge of the sport and the ability to make everything fun. Nils loves skiing at Spring Gulch and is a single speed bike extraordinaire.
Ben Koons – 2014-2017 Devo Team Coach, Aspen
Ben Koons is a New Zealander that can’t get enough of skiing in the United States of America. He moved to Maine with his family when he was 14 and soon picked up the sport of cross country skiing. Ben attended NCAA DI Dartmouth College where he was a ski team Captain and a member of the 2007 NCAA National Championship team. He graduated with a degree in environmental engineering and tons of international racing experience. Ben competed at the 2010 Olympics in Whistler, BC where he led the 30K for awhile. Ben earned his USSA L100 coaching certification and he joins AVSC Nordic for his third year. He lives in Old Snowmass, spends his days as an architect and holds onto his Kiwi accent for dear life.
